More and more people are either creating or considering starting an online business as a means by which they can make money on the internet. In these hard economic times this is not surprising for two reasons. Firstly, when you have limited resources and funding, it is sometimes hard to stretch your dollars sufficiently to meet your financial obligations. Secondly, it takes a lot less capital to set up an online business than it does a traditional “bricks and mortar” business.

Although the start up and running expenses may be a great deal less online, you still are not any more likely to succeed and make money on the internet than you will be with an offline business unless you have a specific goal in mind and get started in the right money making niche.

As a beginning marketer, though, with little knowledge of the internet, it’s unfortunate that you can be more susceptible to the “get rich quick” schemes and scams that are so prevalent on the internet today

If you happen to fall into this category, here’s one quick tip for you: Whenever you are presented with one of the so-called money making opportunities that promise you overnight riches without the need for you to do anything or claims that you will become a millionaire in a short time, you can be reasonably certain that is going to be a scam and you risk losing any investment you are encouraged to make.

Fortunately there are plenty of legitimate ways you can make money online.

As Zig Zigler puts it, you can’t eat all the different foods on a cafeteria food bar – you have to be selective and chose only those foods that you like. This advice applies to your online business in a real sense. If you are going to make money online, you have to find a niche market that likes the products or services that you like and intend to promote.

Why is this? Because only those in your particular niche market will have the same enthusiasm that you have for the products and services you are promoting. No matter how great you think your product or service may be, there must be a continual demand for it, or you won’t make money on the internet.

Here’s a quick tip: To increase your chances of making money on the internet, you should start a business promoting only the products or services that you are passionate about. However, and this is crucially important to your success, make sure that what you are passionate about has enough people searching for  it and are willing to pay for it, otherwise you will end up extremely disappointed.

With that in mind, consider that there are always people searching every day for the skills and expertise that they do not have but they desperately need and are willing to pay for. Some of the more popular ways to make money on the internet include:

* Freelancing
* Ghostwriting
* Graphics design
* Website design
* Article and content writing for websites
* Developing and selling your own products
* Selling items online via auction sites such as Ebay
* Personal coaching in your chosen area of expertise
* Selling other people’s products through affiliate marketing
* Drop shipping where you sell products without holding inventory

But what if you don’t possess any of the above skills, or you would prefer to make money on the internet in some other way. Well, the above are merely suggestions of  ways by which you can make money on the internet.

One lady for example started selling antique clothing via her website. She did extremely well; so well in fact that the more money she made the more passionate she became about selling antique clothing. Today, she is  still quite passionate about what she sells and is making a full time income.  And there are certainly many more like her.

Her success could be duplicated with any product provided there is a demand for it and you are passionate about it.  A handy man who is passionate and skilled in carpentry for example can make money on the internet by setting up a simple website advertising his services and marketing solely within his geographic area. In almost every city, web design companies make money on the internet by providing websites to local business people to market their services. And there are thousands  of other examples of how entrepreneurs and small
business owners have taken their offline business online and have mastered how to make money on the internet.

Whatever product or service you decide to promote on the internet, make certain there is a demand for it.  The internet is overflowing with money making opportunities, but  it is a very competitive marketplace.  To  lessen the competition and level the playing field, chose a specific niche.  Study your chosen niche well by visiting the websites of your potential competition to see what they are up to. Discover who are the top performers and look at how they make money on the internet.
